Schwarzort on the Curonian Spit was a popular holiday resort for Jewish families. In the 19th century the village had also become famous for amber mining, which was organized by Moritz Becker, an important sponsor of the Jewish community of Königsberg. These and many other details could be read in a new publication. Nijole Strakauskaite book “Ostseebad Schwarzort/Juodkrante. Origin – heyday – catastrophe: the “Golden Age” from the middle of the 19th century to 1945 has just been published in German. The book is available in the Thomas Mann House in Nida.
