Dr. Nathan Grumach (1863-1908) was born in Wartenburg (East Prussia in Germany until 1945), today Barczewo (Poland) as the son of the sawmill owner Moritz Grumach and his wife Johanna née Abrahamsohn.

Since he had a beautiful voice, he liked to help out in the synagogue and sing there for services when he came home for Shabbat. Later he married Friederike Mendelsohn from Allenstein and lived with her in Tilsit (today Sowetsk, RU), where he had a job as a notary.
