Žemaičių Naumiestis was a typical border town near East Prussia with a large Jewish population and was called Neishtot Tavrik in Yiddish and Neustadt by its German inhabitants. The town was located just behind the East Prussian outer border near Heydekrug. Today it is a district of the community of Silute, which is the name Heydekrug today and the community belongs to the Republic of Lithuania.
